Happy Monday everyone! I'm posting to you from sunny Long Island, and I'd like to share an experience I had here on my "vacation to home". In the few days I was here, I of course went to a few classes at my home base, CrossFit Long Island. I also stopped in to visit some friends and WOD out with them at CrossFit Stonybrook. The greatest thing about the business side of CrossFit is that it is not a franchise, so each affiliate has total freedom with how they run their business. Because of this model, no two boxes are alike. However, they all have one amazing thing in common: community.
When I first walked into CFLI, I was greeted with hellos and hugs, and a few introductions from people I hadn't met yet. After the class I stayed and talked to other members for over an hour, not realizing how much time had went by. When I hung out with some friends who went to CrossFit Stonybrook one night, they invited me to come workout with them, letting me know I was always welcome in their community too. The same friendly atmosphere applied there as well. Any of you who've been to another box know what I'm talking about. And those of you who travel, don't be afraid to visit any CrossFit gyms in the area!
The point of this is that if I belonged to a globo-gym, I doubt any of the members would even recognize me when I walked into the door, no less hug me! The community that develops from a bunch of people, from all walks of life, coming together to workout is such a special phenomenon. It is a sense of belonging and community that is sadly missing from many of our modern lives. Here is a great article that explains how CrossFit boxes serve as the long lost "third place" that is missing from our communities.
So if you know anyone who would benefit from having a place like 7VCF to go to, bring them down! Have them watch a class or come in during open house hours. Maybe even convince them to sign up for 1.0! In true CrossFit fashion; they're always welcome in our doors. Also, even if you've made a group of friends here already, never stop introducing yourself to new faces. Let everyone know just how welcome they are.
