So, I’ve totally become a high maintenance exerciser. I posted on Facebook about this once already, but I feel like it needs some more attention, because I know I’m NOT alone. You know who you are. Guys and girls alike…
These days, for various reasons, I have so many accessories or luxurious habits that I think help me workout better. Here are some examples. I’m sure some of you can relate.

HEADGEAR. I’m not talking about the night time dental fix. I mean hairtyes, clips and headbands. Lately, I’ve got to have 2 hairtyes so I can braid my hair pre-wod. I know some of you choose the headband. Well, imagine this: The zombies come and before you have time to do your braid, they are busting through your front door. Do you sacrifice yourself so you can be a zombie with a nice tight braid or do you deal with life with your hair flying around? I mean, Andrea and Maggie are usually fighting them off with their hair down. Carol was the smart one that chose short hair…I digress….

LIFTERS. I’ve gotten to a point where any type of squatting I do, I do in my lifters. Wall balls, snatches, thrusters, pistols, etc. It’s become a quick fix for my poor ankle mobility. Now, when I squat in Nanos, I feel like someone who hasn’t been active for 20 years. Things creak and crack and it’s hard to get back up. What have I done? What if I ever have to squat outside where my crisp white 2.0s might get dirty? Yikes. Hopefully that day won’t come. I’m screwed, if it does. Or I could just work on my mobility I guess.

For the record, I’m grateful for these accessories as they add to the enjoyment of my experience, this is CrossFit afterall and not the apocalypse. But, maybe its time to try something new and different. Maybe don’t wear your lifters to snatch in today. Or, “forget” your fancy jump rope at home and settle for one of ours at the box. Or, let the wrist wraps and headbands hangout in the cubby. What can you do without these luxuries? Do they make you a good athlete or can you perform just as well without them?

5 Minute AMRAP
20 Squat Snatch (75/55)
30 Double Unders
Rest 5 Minutes
5 Minute AMRAP
20 Overhead Squat (75/55)
30 Double Unders

Score is reps from the first AMRAP and reps from the second AMRAP
Ex. (68 + 72 = 140) So, yes, you have to do a little math.

I'm pretty sure my headband is the only reason I make it through a WOD. Unless a Zombie Apocalypse actually ever happens...I think I'll keep it on.
