 NUTRITION, continued...

More wise words from Michelle and Steve:

"How do you stop eating bread and pasta and most "carbs"? What's left to give you energy?"

There are lots of substitutes out there for bread and pasta. I make a baked dish with spaghetti squash that is like a lasagna and it is SO GOOD. When I make chili I use butternut squash in place of beans. And sweet potatoes are something we have almost every night. The fruits and veggies and nuts provide lots of energy. Oh and dark chocolate, yup 85%. I make a trail mix every Sunday for snacking on during the week. Almonds, cashews, pecans, dark chocolate pieces, raisins, craisins or other dried fruit. (Make sure the dried fruit has no ADDED sugar, it's sweet enough all by itself)

"I don't think I can do it. It's too different from what I know."

Bet you didn't think you could do half the stuff you do at CrossFit either. You CAN do anything you put your mind to. Seriously though, after 30 days you will love how you feel and won't believe what you used to eat. You aren't restricted to portions on Paleo. You can eat as much as you want. It's really quite easy -BASICS – lean or grassfed meats, lots of non-starchy veggies, moderate amounts of healthy fats and some fresh fruit and starchy roots and tubers. Also remember that Paleo isn't the perfect choice all the time in every situation. And you are going to want to eat a slice (or whole) pizza now and then. Go ahead. You won't die. Your body will let you know that you don't like to eat those things anymore. You won't like how you feel afterwards. Keep the balance. It is ok to reintroduce foods back into your diet. For example, I love cottage cheese and it has so much protein. It is not a Paleo food per-sea, but a) it doesn't bother my body and b) the health benefits I get from the added protein make it a good choice for me to add it into my diet. I look for cottage cheese that has the fewest ingredients (Daisy brand). Compare the label to others, you believe what they put in that stuff! Read the labels on everything you buy. You want foods that have short list of ingredients and ones that you can pronounce.

Steve and I have been eating clean Paleo foods for almost two years and welcome any questions anytime. We will even go to someone's house and help them get started. I have LOTS of recipes, and more tips and websites to share.

Thank you Michelle and Steve for your advice, suggestions and help with this. We'll re-visit some of these points later in the year as we get closer to our 2016 nutrition challenge. If any readers have ideas they'd like to share that have worked for them, please do so in the comments below.
