We use these blogs often to write about nutrition. We've had nutrition challenges in the past, we have one coming up in a few months, and we love to share healthy recipes with each other. We're all in favor, even the most reluctant of us can be convinced, of eating healthy. We've acknowledged that excess sugar is detrimental to body composition. But what we've never discussed here in the blog is the affects that alcohol has on our fitness and health. If you're in favor of fitter healthier lives, why avoid this topic? I'm bringing it up because this is a serious issue that should not be swept under the rug and ignored.

1. Alcohol consumption negatively affects your sleep. It interrupts your usual sleep cycles that your body needs to be able to recover from the day's events and exercise.

2. Alcohol dehydrates you. Did you know our bodies are made up of 60% water? And lean muscle tissue is 99% water? So, when you drink alcohol you're now shutting off the delivery of water to your body systems, including the muscular system. This makes you much more prone to injury! Yikes!

3. Alcohol damages brain cells and the liver. No explanation needed.

4. Alcohol gets stored as fat. Alcohol is not a nutrient that your body can use, so it gets stored as fat, hence the belly you just can't seem to get rid of no matter how many sit-ups you do.

5. Alcohol leads to a loss of self-control and common sense. This may be the most detrimental. Your loss of self control may lead you to eating several slices of pizza soaked in blue cheese at two in the morning. Or, it may lead you to do something that you'll regret the next morning or be super embarrassed about when you show your face in public next.
