What a Jerk!

By D. Soprano

Don’t be offended. I’ll get to that point later.
But first, I wanted to check in with our 5 day sugar-less participants.
So, let me give you a quick rundown of how my week went.
Monday- "This is so easy. I mean, come on, it’s only 5 days. Psshhh…"
Tuesday- "SOLID. Why is this even a challenge? I’m so healthy."
Wednesday- "But, I’m only human, dammit! Am I allowing myself to try some vegan/non-dairy ice cream after dinner? I mean, my main problem is with cookies, cakes, and dark chocolate covered things… Okay, I had two small (yes, I’m being honest, they were small, I have a witness that can testify) spoon-fulls of some chocolate coconut non-dairy “ice cream”. And you know what, I didn’t want to eat the entire container. I was able to put it back in the freezer before I ate enough to put me into a sugary trancelike state of confusion."
Thursday- "How about raw organic honey? I just got some and I’m dying to put it in my smoothie. Okay, yea, I’ll eat some honey."
Friday- is yet to come...But, I'll be alright.

So, I allowed myself some minor inputs of sugary things. But, I think I still got 2 huge benefits out of the challenge.
1. Limiting the sugary items made me crave them less. Once I had a little taste of the "ice cream", I was able to put the spoon down after just a taste. Probably because it was actually "non-dairy frozen dessert" and not real ice cream!
2. I forced myself to pack healthier options for snacks/meals instead of being stuck with nothing and just grabbing something, anything that’s near.

What will next week be like? I don’t know. I’m still searching for a happy balance. Food is part of our culture, especially desserts. I won’t avoid them all the time, especially not for special occasions with friends/family. But, I will be more conscious about the negative effect they have on my body. Every time the hand goes to the mouth it’s an opportunity to better yourself-gained- or lost.

If you participated, leave a comment below about your week! It can be quick note about any aspect of the sugar-reduction test. Can’t wait to hear!

Now, back to the article title. What a jerk!
You’re going to hear that a lot today. No, not because you did something mean, but because your jerks are going to be something to awe at.

Besides some honey and almond butter on Wednesday, I made it through the sugar-free week. And I hit about 80% paleo this week too. I'm down 8lbs in 2.5 weeks.

Now the inlaws and my parents are both visiting for the weekend, so I may have to indulge for sanity's sake. Back to the grind on Monday :)

Thanks for good classes this week!

So I will be the first to admit I slipped. I made it thru monday and tuesday with no problems. Wednesday I split a dessert at a restaurant with my boyfriend for date night. I was happy to note that I didn't eat the whole thing by myself and the craving wasn't quite as strong as usual (though it was still there). Thursday and friday I was good with no problems. I think this is a challenge we should try again. Maybe the second time around I'll make it (with no cheat day).
